What to expect with varicose vein ablation

Before Varicose Vein Ablation

  • You may be advised to stop taking blood thinning medication; that is, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) or blood thinner, such as warfarin.

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting cloths and do not wear jewellery in the area to be treated

  • You should plan to walk for 30–40 minutes immediately after the procedure and daily thereafter for 14 days.

During Varicose Vein Ablation

  • An ultrasound will be used to map which veins will be treated

  • Your leg with be shaved, cleaned, sterilized and covered with a drape

  • The area to be treated will be numbed with a local anaesthetic

  • The RFA or Laser catheter is inserted into the vein

  • Laser or radiofrequency energy is applied as the fibre or catheter is slowly withdrawn and removed as this is done the varicose vein is sealed and blood flows to healthy veins



After Varicose Vein Ablation

  • You will need to walk after the procedure, but avoid strenuous (weight) exercises with your legs for at least 2-3 weeks after.

  • Bruising and mild discomfort may still persist for 2-4 weeks

  • Within 1 week you will notice a difference in size of the varicose vein, complete results may take weeks or months.

  • Plan to walk 30-40 minutes daily for 14 days after your procedure

  • You will need to wear compression stockings for 2-3 weeks.

    The leg has two systems of veins, the deep and the superficial. Between these two systems there are many collateral pathways to enable normal venous blood flow. When the diseased superficial system is treated, the blood gets redirected into the deep system without affecting blood flow in the leg

    Within one week patients may start to notice a difference in the prominence of their varicose veins, but complete results may take weeks to months. Additionally, some patients may require adjunctive procedures depending on the severity of their varicose veins, as mentioned above.

    The goal of the endovenous procedure is to thrombose, or clot, the saphenous vein (a superficial vein). Rarely, there are situations where the clot can extend into the deep vein system and cause a DVT (deep venous thrombosis).
